Class Information

Beginner Class Goals

This class takes students from the first steps of studying Japanese to basic grammar. Japanese writing (hiragana, katakana, and kanji), correct pronunciation, and foundational grammar are learned and students will be able to speak in daily conversations.

Lower Beginner Class

Listening|Able to understand someone's introduction when spoken slowly.
Speaking|Able to introduce yourself with someone's help.
Reading|Able to read and understand posters and notices written in simple language and known vocabulary.
Writing|Able to write postcards using simple sentences and greetings.

Upper Beginner Class

Listening|Able to understand short situations in everyday life (shopping, work, neighborhoods) when spoken slowly.
Speaking|Able to speak about a wide range of familiar situations with someone's help.
Reading|Able to read and understand basic, predictable things from daily life such as advertisements and menus.
Writing|Able to write about things that are necessary for daily life such as memos and messages.

Intermediate Class Goals

This class focuses on basic daily conversations after completing beginner grammar. The four language skills of reading, listening, speaking, and writing are continued to be built and students aim to pass Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N2/N3.

Lower Intermediate Class

Listening|Able to understand situations in topics such as work, school, and social events when spoken in an easy-to-understand way.
Speaking|Able to speak about things around you even without preparation. Able to speak about the contents of a book and about your feelings.
Reading|Able to read and understand things that are used often in daily life.
Writing|Able to read about and give reasons about daily things that you are interested in.

Upper Beginner Class

Listening|Able to understand longer conversations, lectures, or discussions.
Speaking|Able to naturally participate in conversations with Japanese people.
Reading|Able to read and understand articles with opinions.
Writing|Able to write about and give reasons about a wide range of topics.

Advanced Class Goals

This class is for those who wish to read and write at a daily conversational level. This class prepares students for post-secondary institutes, employment, and life in Japanese society through necessary, advanced Japanese. Students in this class aim to pass Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N1.

Lower Advanced Class

Listening|Able to understand conversations, movies, and news broadcasts where the contents are unpredictable.
Speaking|Able to change speaking styles depending on who you are speaking to. Able to speak about complicated topics from different viewpoints.
Reading|Able to read and understand long and complicated compositions.
Writing|Able to organize and write compositions containing several points.

Upper Advanced Class

Listening|Able to understand any kind of conversations or words (at any speed, dialect, or personal speaking styles).
Speaking|Able to express oneself naturally and correctly and able to actively participate in conversations.
Reading|Able to read and understand any kind of written material (able to understand abstract writing or novels).
Writing|Able to write compositions with the reader in mind that leave an impression on the reader.
